PGMA bares formula for success before 2,000 Natâ•˙l SK Congress delegates
CEBU CITY â•" Use your energy and get involved in civic activities to
make your dreams come true.
This was the message of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to 2,000
delegates to the 2008 Sangguniang Kabataan National Congress held this
morning at the convention hall of Waterfront Hotel and Casinos in
Barangay Lahug here.
╲On this occasion I call for a vision of a young nation. It is you,
the youth of this nation who have the energy to make your dreams come
true. It is now time for you, the young generation to get involved in
civic life, take action and take responsibility for your own
fortunes,╡ the President said.
The President urged them to ╲use the tools╡ that the government, their
family and the nation, offered them to become doctors, lawyers,
farmers, healthcare workers, and leaders in high tech and clean tech
and members of many other noble professions.
She told the delegates that since she assumed the presidency, her
vision for the nation has been to create high-paying jobs in the
country, not abroad, so that the young generation would not experience
the pains of having to work far away from their loved ones.
The President informed the youth leaders that under her
administration, the ╲job abroad is a career of choice and not the only
option available to a hard working Filipino.╡
╲In addition to jobs at home, we must build a new quality of life at
home that keeps young and beautiful, like you, its people,╡ she said.
On the ongoing drive for the Green Philippines, the President asked
the delegates to join hands with the government in its effort to
revive the forests and replenish trees in order to protect the
countryâ•˙s land and the future generation.
She explained that she wants to tap the youth because they have charm
and enthusiasm and are true partners of the government in the Green
╲We need to beautify our trashy barangays and cities; build more urban
parks and recreation areas, purify our water; and clean up unhealthy
and eye-sore industrial sites,╡ she said, noting that the government
is doing its best to resolve the alarming escalation of pollution
caused by exhaust-spewing cars and smokestacks.
The aim of Green Philippines is to free the country from dependence on
imported oil products and become an energy-efficient nation, turn
coral reefs and beaches, the wonder of the world, into national parks
and international sanctuaries for eco-tourism and scientific research.
╲We have the chance to develop our nation right from the start: clean,
healthy, productive and beautiful. I want you, our young people today,
to be part of the Green Philippines. I issue a call to action to make
it happen in three years,╡ the President said.
╲I have strong faith in our youth and todayâ•˙s young leaders. I know
you will not shirk from these challenges. You will not neglect your
country and abandon your future,╡ she added, as she congratulated the
organizers and SK leaders for the successful conduct of the congress.
She also lauded them for making the 2008 SK National Congress the most
attended since 1992.
After her speech, the President turned over a check for P10 million to
the SK national federation. To serve as equity for the projects of the
organization as approved by the SK council.
